The Pre-Raphaelite Tragic Love: Images of Fallen and Awakening Women

中文摘要
英國維多利亞時代對女性的嚴苛道德要求,造就社會上許多悲劇之愛中,被驅逐出家庭與社會,淪落街頭的「墮落女子」角色。這些違反社會道德認知的愛情與女性,成為反抗英國皇家藝術學院傳統的拉斐爾前派繪畫作品中,相當重要的主題。本文將探討三位主要拉斐爾前派畫家:羅塞提、杭特與米雷,關於悲劇之愛的作品裡,藉由與傳統和同時代「墮落」、「覺醒」女性圖像的衝突,對不倫之愛的悲憫,以及嘗試在作品中,影射須對女性悲劇角色負責任的男性等方式,喚起維多利亞時代道德框架下,人們對性別角色不平等的思考,促使當代正視女性人性面需求的努力。

English Abstract
The harsh demands toward women in Victorian era created the character of “fallen woman” who was exiled by family and society, wandering in the streets in tragic love stories. The women who violated Victorian morality became important subject matters in the paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites, who resisted the aesthetic principles of the Royal Academy. This article is a study on the subjects of tragic love in the works of three major Pre-Raphaelite artists --- Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Millais. Through the contrast and conflict with the traditional and contemporary imagery of “fallen” and “awakening” woman and through their sympathy toward the unethical love, the three artists try to imply, in their paintings, the male responsibility for the female character’s moral downfall and to prompt the Victorians to reconsider the unbalanced gender roles within the moral frame in Victorian society.
